Starfish International is a school and organisation supporting young girls through the power of world-class education.
It is a non-profit organisation. For the past 9 years, the organisation’s approach to solving the underdevelopment and poverty that characterises its community and neighbourhood has been the education of middle school and high school girls, who are high achieving but at risk of dropping out. Its strategy focuses not only on providing scholarships to enable the girls to continue their education and graduate, but also on creating service-oriented leaders who are determined to serve their families, their communities, their country and the world.
One of the most effective ways through which the organisation has been fighting against social and economic exclusion is teaching these girls skills they can use to earn income, advocate for their rights as well as have a voice in decision making. Photography, videography, small businesses and media work, and entrepreneurship have been a successful avenues used by the girls in our programme to uplift themselves economically, socially and even mentally
The school wanted to introduce the ABE L2 Award in Setting up your own Business because they recognised the value of the ABE brand, the content, and the credential, to enhance the great work they are already doing. On completion of the course Starfish gives the girls a small amount of money to help them start their small business.
